Night Prayer
And he prayed unto the Lord, and said, I pray thee, O Lord, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.
Inspiration
Jonah describes the beautiful character of our loving God; he feels God is too merciful in His decision to extend salvation to the people on Ninevah. In Jonah's opinion, they were unworthy; it's our unworthiness that makes the mercy of God so precious. None of us deserve salvation, but God loved us so much, He sent His Son as the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. We are blessed to be surrounded by His selfless love.
Prayer
Dearest Lord, You have mercy on us when we do not deserve it. We are so thankful for Your unconditional love and will continue to live our lives according to Your plan. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
Devotion
Before the discovery of handwashing with soap, hospitals were often places where diseases spread, instead of being cured. Doctors would go from patient to patient with dirty hands, full of bacteria and germs, and accidentally infect those they sought to cure. Human life expectancy rose rapidly after the discovery of sanitary health practices. Only by being clean, can we avoid disease.
The earlier one can bring one's children or grandchildren into the faith, the better. For this is much like washing one's spiritual hands. Our children suffer from sin as much as we do, but without the correct sanitation, those sins may accumulate and become contagious.
Prayer
We know that a spiritual life can be difficult, arduous, fraught with set backs and doubts. Yet many of us carry on not only because it is the true path but because we know Scripture, we know passages we may read or reread for comfort, we are saved. The Gospel cleans us of sin and boosts our spiritual immune system.
